Social Roads Dust

Nkwanta (O/R), Jan 30, 2026 – Some residents and commuters, who ply the Nkwanta-Kpassa segment of the Eastern Corridor Road in the Oti Region are appealing to authorities for urgent intervention as excessive dust along the stretch continues to pose serious health and safety concerns.

The deplorable nature of the road, which serves as a major link between Nkwanta township, its surrounding communities, and Kpassa, has been in such a situation over decades, making transportation difficult among commuters.

The humorous aspect of the development is that passengers on that corridor dress or protect themselves in apparel to subdue the dust and its effect on them, appear unrecognizable on reaching their destinations.

Ghana News Agency, in an interview with some residents, who ply the road, complained that he harmattan season was exacerbating their plight with the moving vehicles raising dust into the air, which comes with its attendant matters.

Maame Esi, a resident on the corridor, said visibility becomes extremely poor and travelling uncomfortable.

Motorists and commercial drivers also shared their concerns that the situation has increased the risk of accidents if something is not done urgently, especially during this dry season.

They also stated that the dust often settles on windscreens, forcing them to reduce speed or stop intermittently to clean their vehicles.

Some residents who live along the road were not spared, and they are, however, complaining of some health issues facing them such as persistent coughing, eye irritation, breathing difficulties, and many health problems.

They are therefore calling on the Municipal Assembly and the Ministry of Roads and Highways as a matter of urgency to act swiftly to douse the situation.
