Accra, Jan. 26, 2026 – The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has dismissed as false reports alleging the exploitation of Ghanaian peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
A statement issued by the Department of Public Relations at the General Headquarters, Burma Camp, and signed by Naval Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director, said the publication circulating in sections of the media contained inaccuracies that could undermine troop morale and damage Ghana’s international image.
The statement refuted claims that Ghanaian troops deployed in Lebanon had been barred from shopping outside their camps.
It said that due to the volatile security situation in UNIFIL’s area of operations, Force Headquarters had facilitated the establishment of shopping facilities within certain battalion locations.
The statement said 11 shops operated by local Lebanese were permitted across two Ghana Battalion (GHANBATT) locations, with only one designated as a Post Exchange (PX) shop managed by the battalion.
It said similar arrangements existed in other UNIFIL battalions, and that Ghanaian troops were not restricted to shopping at only the PX shop, as alleged.
On claims that troops were required to pay for their own airfare when proceeding on leave to Ghana, the GAF described the allegation as untrue.
“The Government of Ghana continues to fully fund troops’ airfare for all Ghana Armed Forces personnel on peacekeeping duties, including those serving with UNIFIL,” the statement said.
The GAF cautioned that the spread of misinformation could undermine discipline and morale among troops and harm the country’s reputation.
It urged media practitioners to verify facts thoroughly before publication in the interest of national security and responsible journalism.
