Weta (V/R), Jan 21, 2026 — The Volta Regional Minister, Mr James Gunu, has led a team to inspect the Weta Irrigation Dam, also known as the Dekpor Dam, as the government announced plans for its comprehensive rehabilitation.
The team included Mr. Eric Edem Agbana, Member of Parliament for Ketu North, and Rev. Martin Amenaki, the Municipal Chief Executive. The visit aimed to assess the dam’s condition and engage stakeholders on challenges affecting its operations.
The inspection revealed years of neglect, with visible cracks in parts of the structure, overgrown embankments and underutilised facilities, including fish ponds. The dam remains a vital source of water for farming and livelihoods in surrounding communities.
Mr Gunu said the decline would soon end following President John Dramani Mahama’s directive, announced through the Minister for Food and Agriculture, for a full rehabilitation of the facility. He described the intervention as a strategic move to restore a national asset, expand irrigation farming and strengthen food security.
“This project is about restoring hope, boosting dry-season farming and improving incomes, while building resilience to climate change,” he said.
Mr Agbana disclosed plans to attract private sector investment to develop the dam’s fish ponds for commercial aquaculture, a move expected to create jobs, especially for the youth, and increase fish production.
Rev Amenaki assured the Assembly’s full support, pledging close collaboration with relevant ministries, contractors and stakeholders to ensure effective implementation and sustainability.
The rehabilitation is expected to begin later this year, repositioning the Weta Irrigation Dam as a centre for agricultural productivity and local economic development.
