Accra, Jan. 30, 2026 – The Private Universities Founders Association (PUFA)-Ghana has commended President John Dramani Mahama for granting the Association an audience to discuss key issues affecting the private tertiary education sector.

The engagement, held at the Jubilee House and attended by Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman, allowed PUFA-Ghana to present concerns relating to national policy on private university chartering.

A statement signed by Dr Paul Kofi Fynn, President of PUFA-Ghana, described the meeting as historic, noting that it was the first time both the President and Vice President had jointly met with the Association’s leadership.

PUFA-Ghana said the interaction demonstrated government’s recognition of private universities as a vital pillar of Ghana’s tertiary education system.

The Association welcomed government’s indication of an optional chartering system, rather than a mandatory time-bound requirement, describing it as a positive policy shift that would support sustainability and growth in the private university sector.

PUFA-Ghana expressed appreciation for the government’s openness to dialogue and its commitment to creating an enabling environment for private institutions.

The Association reaffirmed its readiness to collaborate with government to advance a competitive, inclusive and globally aligned tertiary education system in Ghana.
